Medical Care and Injury Services levy

What is the Medical Care and Injury Services levy?

The Medical Care and Injury Services (MCIS) levy appears as a separate item on your Green Slip. The MCIS levy covers the costs of:

  • ambulance and initial NSW public hospital treatment for all those injured in motor accidents in NSW
  • care for the seriously injured (through the Lifetime Care and Support Authority)
  • administration of the regulatory and assessment services provided by the Motor Accidents Authority and Roads and Maritime Services.

The MCIS Levy is calculated as a percentage of the base premium charged by the Green Slip insurer. It varies according to vehicle class and geographic zone.  The MAA sets and regularly reviews the levy rate, as approved by the board.

The following table shows the MCIS Levy, from 1 January 2014, in each zone for three common vehicle types.
