Motorcycle Classifications

The MAA regularly reviews the claims experience of the various vehicle classes in the Green Slip scheme.

In response to concerns raised by motorcyclists about Green Slip prices, the MAA has been working with the Motorcycle Council of NSW to review the guidelines Green Slip insurers must follow in setting Green Slip prices for motorcycles.

The review found that the existing guidelines for setting motorcycle Green Slip prices were grouping too many motorcycles together. This meant that some motorcycle owners were probably paying too much for their Green Slip and were cross-subsidising other motorcycle owners.

As a result, the MAA required Green Slip insurers to follow improved guidelines which introduced five new classes for motorcycles. From 1 July 2010, the relative motorcycle classifications will be based on the following ranges of engine capacity:

  • 225cc or less
  • 226cc to 725cc
  • 726cc to 1125cc
  • 1126cc to 1325cc
  • greater than 1325cc

Green Slip prices vary based on each individual's circumstances so it is important to shop around to make sure you are getting the very best Green Slip price available. The MAA provides a Green Slip Calculator which allows you to access Green Slip prices for each of the seven licensed insurers in one place.

The MAA will investigate any complaints about Green Slip prices from motorcyclists and help to find the best available price. Comments from motorcycle owners and riders can be sent to motorcycles@maa.nsw.gov.au or by calling 1300 656 919.

The MAA is committed to continuing to work with the Motorcycle Council of NSW to ensure the fairness of Green Slip prices for motorcycle riders.
